My Students

My biggest challenge is to get and keep my students engaged. They struggle with a multitude of challenges and distractions in high school, and they still try their hardest every day. They are inquisitive and curious about everything around them. Our school is a self contained building with very few windows.

My students are smart, intelligent, and driven.

They accept challenges that they find in their path and push them out of the way. Half of my class have disabilities that make it difficult for them to maintain their focus and stay involved in the class. They are a lively, brilliant, and quirky bunch of young people. Our school is a racially and economically diverse school. We have a strong community and are known throughout the district for having strong academics, but resources are sadly lagging behind. They love to take on challenges and hold themselves accountable.

My Project

I want to create a hub within my class and the science department where students can display there TED Talk creations that answer essential questions in my 'inquiry-based learning' model. They will use the media making skills they have learned to promote student inquiry. My students create 4-6 minute Ted Talks for certain science concepts, but they have no place to display them for a larger public classroom.

Students will rise to the challenge when their work is being seen and critiqued by their peers.

We need a TV that can project students digital TED Talks, to be set up in the hallway of the science wing. Fellow students passing by will be able to experience short Ted Talks by their classmates based around science concepts. Students will be able to inspire their school and raise their level of competency at the same time.
