My Students

"The limits of your language are the limits of your world." - Ludwig Wittgenstein "The limits of your technology are the limits of your world." - 21st century employers

I have the pleasure at teaching at the one of the only public urban all-girls schools in Michigan, in the heart of Detroit.

My girls come from all over the city and bring their stories and struggles with them. They are goofy, curious, principled, hilarious, ornery, hard headed, affectionate young ladies. We have students from several diverse backgrounds, but a majority of our girls are from the African American and Bengali immigrant communities in Detroit. Many of my students do not have Internet access at home. Though they are supposed to receive Netbook personal computers, only half of my students will have them on a daily basis due to a number of reasons and barriers. I notice that often the scholars who do not have internet access at home or access to smart phones, computers, etc. on a daily basis are often falling behind their peers. Help them discover the great big exciting Latin American world!

My Project

With a class group set of tablets, my students can have Spanish Speaking culture and language at their fingertips! Instead of hearing the teacher say sentences aloud, students will be able to interact with native speakers and use self discovery in their pursuit of the language. Programs like Duolingo, Quizlet, and Babbel engage students in self paced language learning that access all modes of language acquisition- and make learning it fun! I envision students being able to record themselves speaking Spanish, and even Skype with the vast online Spanish speaking community. These tablets would widen the horizons for my girls and take our listening/technology station to another level. Also, these tablets will provide students who finish early with classroom activities a chance to further their language learning totally on their own!

Donations to this project will help in my goal to make our classroom a link to the larger global world.

This will give my kids a wider perspective and allow them to follow their own curiosities and pursuits. This reinforces to them how important language is in our global world. Technology is a huge driving force of this globalization. And to my kids who fall behind their peers with technological tools, these tablets will provide critical tech exposure.
