My Title I, level 1 (lowest 25%) Specific Learning Disabled (SLD), Emotionally/Behavioral Disabled (EBD) high school students are in ICU! Yes, they are enrolled in Intensive Reading Plus (+)! More than 90% of the student population qualifies for free and/or reduced-price lunch. Approximately 80% of the students live in single-family homes.
Our high school has received more than 117 transfer evacuee students from either Puerto Rico or Trinidad that are eager to graduate on time.
However, we have pockets of high schoolers that are not motivated to graduate at all. Our high school was one of the three low performing schools in our district. We have made positive gains academically. Please help our new devastated students acclimate with ease to their new environment. Please help our unmotivated students to use their creativity to motivate and boost their self-esteem. They are in need of an innovative project to ease their transition and help them socially and emotionally.
The computer-assisted reading program HMH offers my remedial readers is READ 180/ System 44. The 9th and 10th graders must have a MacBook Pro and PC touchscreen laptop computer. The students must access the program often. The students' goal is to be active on the program at least 45 minutes a week.
Reading is fun, fabulous and FUNDAMENTAL.
My students need to be proficient readers. My expertise is to facilitate learners as they equip themselves with a toolkit to be a fluent reader, effective communicator and wonderful writer. the students do not have access to technology or internet, but if they have access to laptops in class they can use the program more efficiently. Ultimately, their reading will improve due to increased time on task.
