My Students
My students are such warriors! Many of them are newly arrived immigrants from countries like Yemen, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Some of them have seen the destruction of their communities and the destruction of their schools. Despite that, they walk into my English class room with a smile on their face eager to read and write.
Many of them have faced difficulties gaining access to formal and continuous schooling in their home countries; and even though I can't change that, I know that every day is a new opportunity for a step forward.
My students are ambitious, inquisitive, and energetic, and our class looks a little differently than most. We use our hands... A LOT. We laugh A LOT. We Google Image things A LOT. My students see school as a place of joy, and that is something really special.
My Project
Most of my English Language Learners are excited to read, but are still learning to decode newly learned words! The C-Pen is a digital device that scans words on a page and reads them out loud. Part of my curriculum is teaching students self-reliance and independence. While my students are excited to read, at times they feel disconnected from the rest of the class because their teacher reads out loud mostly to them. C-Pens allow my English Language Learners to participate in our class's independent reading periods with their peers , but also receive support with decoding. The C-Pens also offer definitions for when my students are learning new vocabulary. This technology allows my students to read at their own pace, while still providing instructional benefits.
