Being in south MS, we are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Our area was devastated by it. Many of my students and their families lost everything. As a teacher in a low-socioeconomic school, I see that my students are constantly faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. When my students walk into my classroom, I do not want them to worry about whether or not they will have the technology to be successful. In my school, 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and it is the only meal some of them get. My students cannot afford the technology they need to excel in my classroom, and, unfortunately, neither can the school.
Most of my students have a desire to learn and love learning; they want to learn and excel in their education, and with your help, I can help them accomplish that.
My Project
Many of my students do not have technology at home, so it is imperative that I teach them how to use the devices that are readily used in the real world. The Chromebooks make a huge difference in my students' learning. Currently, I only have 8 Chromebooks, but my largest class size is 32, which means a lot of my students in that class do not have access to Chromebooks. In order for my students to be fully engaged in our lessons, they need Chromebooks. Furthermore, my students need to be familiar with online homework and tests since that is what most colleges are now using, and the Chromebooks will help do just that through Google Classroom.
Most importantly, many of my students struggle to read and write, and I utilize programs in my room to help a struggling student write a complete sentence and allow the Chromebooks to read to the students when they may not understand the written language.
The Chromebooks will also make it possible for my students to explore vivid, real-life locations outside our community. Google Earth is amazing!! Students can actively participate in class lectures through their Chromebooks and PearDeck software. In addition, having access to Chromebooks will make it much easier for students to make up missing assignments because they will have access to the recorded lecture they missed while they were out, and access to their assignments on Google Classroom.
Chromebooks are an invaluable tool!! Our goal is to be 1:1 with technology because Chromebooks keep my students actively engaged in class and will help prepare my students for college, thus preparing him/her for life. Thank you for making a difference in their lives and for believing in us.
