Technology Use In Reading

My Students

Can you think of a job today that does not use some form of technology? I know that as I start my fifth year teaching, even I can see a major change in what we do on computers versus on paper. Many of my students do not use computers at home. How will they be ready for a job in today's world?

I teach in an inner city school in what is considered a high-need community.

Though we do have a couple new computers in each room, there are not enough to get every child on during the day. My students rarely use computers at home. I worry about this lack of experience for their future careers. I will be teaching second grade this year. Children at this age are quite capable of learning how to run computers and other devices on their own. I want to expose my students to new devices and show them what other children, in different environments, use regularly.

My Project

I would like to begin using a Nook for reading and phonic practice during my centers each day. Partners would love to work together to practice without my help. I can let them rotate throughout the week and also use it as an incentive that will encourage reading at the same time. I like the Nook color because you can get children's books with beautiful illustrations that would not be the same in black and white. I could also let them use this for rainy day recess play as well as a reward for good behavior or for those who are above or below their peers. I strongly believe that peer tutoring benefits both students. By pairing advanced and remedial students together, or older students with my second graders, we will be able to make great progress. This Nook would be an incentive for all involved to work well together.

Please help me give my students all the opportunities they deserve.

If children in inner city schools do not get the same experiences upper class families are able to provide from home, they will not be ready to compete on the same playing field in the future.
