My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many obstacles they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, intelligent and very hard working.
They come from diverse neighborhoods, backgrounds, and family lives, but one thing they all have in common is they set high goals and standards for themselves. They are faced with many challenges that many of their peers in other school districts don't have to confront, yet they never use that as an excuse not to work hard and strive for success. They are my motivation and inspire me daily!
My Project
When you picture a typical classroom most people will envision students focused towards the front of the room, engaging with material being presented by their teacher, often with the use of technology. I am facing a real challenge with the most basic aspects of delivering material to my students. My classroom's technology equipment is a decade old and on it's last leg of life. While it has served me and my students well, it will not be a reliable option for much longer. Our document camera is held together by scotch tape and the picture quality is diminishing. Our projector is showing warning signs of irreparable wear after years of use.
Every 21st century student should have access to baseline technology.
Giving low-income students this access is an investment in their future. Our district has already informed our school's media specialist that replacing outdated equipment is not possible at this time. This equipment will ensure that my student's are not met with additional barriers to their learning.
