This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of students' grades and school-wide data indicated that the students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group in our schools.
My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class reads at a Pre-Kindergarten grade level struggling with basic phonics and number sense.
Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and history without the requisite tools to teach our students.
In a Special Education classroom, having technology like Chromebooks will allow the students to access different learning websites and close that achievement gap. During our daily routine students will be able to utilize the Chromebooks for websites that are specialized for students with special needs. I am able to differentiate students learning as well as reach the different learning styles that my students have. Having this kind of technology readily available will allow for authentic 21st century language, math, science and social studies experiences.
My Project
Having Chromebooks allows my students access to one-to-one technology and the ability to see a world outside of theirs. I am requesting ten Chromebooks to provide basic phonics, math and research capabilities for students with learning and emotional disabilities. Additionally, computers will allow students to access interactive web-based programs. Research indicates that online learning has myriad benefits for students, particularly in the area of mathematics, where students typically struggle. Access to computers is important for students in our classes, as many of them do not have access to word such technology in their homes. Further, many of these students' disabilities impact their ability to write with a pencil or pen.
This project is important because students with disabilities represent the "front line" of the achievement gap.
The average reading and level for students in our classes is the Pre-K or Kindergarten grade level. However, the situation is more critical than grades can suggest. Research has determined that access to computers in school has a significant impact on student learning.
