Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In teaching middle school, I have found what a huge impact a close knit community has on feeling secure and confident in who you are. With a large Newcomers program and students from very diverse backgrounds we work together provide a space where all students have the resources that they need to be successful and safe.
As we return to in-person learning after COVID19, my students have demonstrated admirable resilience in their efforts to continue their education.
As a teacher, I hope to support my students in their unique needs and provide them with the tools they need to invest in their futures.
My Project
The pandemic has caused the loss of many writing skills that students will need as they prepare for high school. In order to help our students recover and master these skills, we have implemented something called Write Like a Champion. Write Like a Champion is designed to assess student writing, collect data on specific writing skills, and collaborate to provide appropriate interventions. While we have seen a lot of success in our efforts, providing our students with the accommodations that they need is difficult with limited technology. Because my laptop is often used to display materials and resources, I am often limited as to what I can do while connected to a chord and projector.
A tablet provides the features and mobility for me to give my students assistance quickly and efficiently while they use the computer to display resources and complete digital lessons.
It can often be difficult for my English Learners and students identified in special education to access grade level texts and progress in our Write Like a Champion work. Through the tablet, I will be able to quickly provide my students with differentiated texts, translated materials, and other resources quickly and discreetly. Having this resource will also allow me to collect data quickly and provide students with immediate feedback that they can make use of right away.
SMART Goal:
70% or more of our Sparks Middle School students will be writing at Level 3 or further by the end of the 2nd quarter.
85% of our Sparks Middle School students will be writing at Levels 3 and 4 by the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
Standards:
Anchor Standard: W 6.2, 7.2, 8.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts and information through the selection, organization and analysis of relevant content.
