Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a 4th-grade special education teacher in the Bronx, NY. I teach in an Integrated Co-Teaching classroom in which there are special education students learning alongside general education students. This environment allows a unique opportunity for students to work together and learn from each other in a classroom with two teachers.
My students are curious learners who love technology, like most children living in the 21st century.
We are part of a new and growing school community and resources are limited. Our school consists of culturally diverse students within a low socio-economic community and the need for technology would greatly help improve and enhance our students’ growing minds.
My Project
The iPad is one tool that serves many purposes. It supports students with various learning disabilities while targeting those individuals with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic needs. In reading, the iPad supports students with fluency and comprehension skills. It supports visual learners with interactive activities and animation that motivate them to grow and learn. Additionally, the font size can be adjusted to support students with poor vision and dyslexia. Kinesthetic students love the interactive movement apps and they help keep them focused and engaged. A big challenge for my students is building their stamina and the use of iPads and technology is one of the biggest supporters of this. In writing, students are able to improve their writing skills by practicing revising and editing, improving their grammar, and building their vocabulary. In math, many of my students need support in improving their basic foundational skills. iPads provide a fun and interactive way for students to improve their math fluency while promoting self-confidence. A beneficial feature of the iPad is the recording feature. Students are able to listen and review recorded lessons that need to be retaught in order to better understand a concept, and they can do this independently and at their own pace. In this technology-driven world, the use of technology in our classroom would significantly help improve my student’s literacy as well as their desire to learn.
