My students need an iPad I can program with specific apps to use with multiple students on a trial basis to determine if they would benefit from a dedicated device to produce written expression.

My Students
I work with students in special education with a variety of needs that range from minor to severe disabilities.
Many of the students I work with have significant motor impairments that prevent them from writing.
Assistive technology is often a great accommodation to allow them to express their thoughts and complete school work.
An iPad has multiple apps to support written expression for students who are unable to write. Prior to recommending use of technology, it is beneficial to implement a trial period in which the student is trained on a device. An iPad with an attachable keyboard would allow me to try this technology prior to requesting a device specifically for the student.
My Project
This iPad and keyboard will allow a variety of students to try technology to determine if it will be an effective form of written expression. Some students who are unable to write with a pencil and paper will benefit from writing, other more severe students will benefit from using apps with pictures to build a sentence. This device will allow students to try an accommodation that will allow them to express themselves when they would otherwise be unable. Once a device has been proven to benefit a child, it is much more likely a device will be dedicated specifically for that student to use long term.
