Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves students with special educational needs. Our student enrollment is primarily comprised of students from single parent, lower socio-economic homes. Our students have emotional and behavioral disorders which affect their academic performances. Students arrive at our school with a variety of educational levels. Some students arrive at our doorstep reading on a first or a second grade level, while being in the eighth grade.

During these uncertain times it has become increasingly evident that our children need continued access to technology both inside and outside of the classroom.

Teaching special needs children at an inner city school in the Bronx requires we, as a school community, to be able to provide our students with the tools they need to achieve goals, as many are not fortunate enough to have the access at home. Bringing one-to-one technology into our classroom would allow for staff members to assist students on both learning how to navigate the benefits of technology, while allowing for differentiated instruction to occur throughout in school instruction.

My Project

Our students predominately come from lower socioeconomic single parent households, which often lack technology access.

Struggling readers eventually fall behind in all subjects as reading is required for success in math, ELA, science and social studies.

Their families struggle with many aspects of life and at times do not prioritize education as their children will probably have to contribute to the household at a young age and forego college. Many of our students struggle with basic skills such as reading and writing. Technology can help students scaffold their deficiencies and focus on the concepts presented during instruction.

“Technology affords our students the ability to learn on par with general education students.”

In today’s society writing is one of the essential tools that teachers use to assess students’ knowledge. Our students do not possess this skill which leads to poor performances at times. Many of the students have the background knowledge but have no means to deliver this knowledge. As Harold Garner theorized, all humans possess different forms of intelligence that can be nurtured and cultivated into productivity. At times our student’s performances are in no way indicative of their present levels of intelligence.

Technology gives our students a conduit to communicate in various methods and mediums. Students will spend quality instruction time inferring, processing information and learning rather than getting frustrated due to lack of skills. Technology will tap into their intelligence and cultivate learning that they may not be able to achieve using traditional learning methods. Please help us bring our students into their future endeavors prepared for the challenges they will face in their educational journeys.
