Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an urban school in Oakland with one of the highest free and reduced-price lunch percentages. I am the math and science teacher for students who have newly arrived to the U.S. They are particularly at risk as many parents have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and many others have been frozen in the Asylum process without any official status or recourse for financial support.
My students are fascinating students from around the world focused on learning English as fast as possible to help support their families.
My Project
Teachers are doing everything they can prepare for the virtual classroom: making videos, building online classrooms, developing new online lessons, and reaching out to families to make sure they know how to best support their students. This work is incredibly important and already full of challenges as teachers learn how to use new technology. An added challenge that I have experienced is trying to do all of this using outdated, slow technology.
Not only am I teaching math to recent immigrants in the process of learning English, but also basic computer skills that will help support their families during this transition.
This new computer with an updated wifi chip will allow me to provide smooth Zoom classes where students can listen and practice speaking English in an uninterrupted manner. As my students are sheltered in place at the center of the Covid outbreak, this class may be their only opportunity to collaborate and interact in English, a vital part of language acquisition. The touch screen and stylus will allow me to seamlessly demonstrate math problems on my whiteboard app just like I would in the classroom. With this new computer, my students will be able to get the quality lessons they deserve.
