Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a 6-12 performing arts school located in the Bronx, NY. Our halls are filled with buzzing, creative, and enthusiastic students ready to take on the love of learning.

Success is no accident; It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

Students arrive to my English classroom eager to engage in enriching discussions about challenging texts as well as controversial topics. They collaborate with one another to produce clear and coherent writing in order to gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of human nature.

My Project

I need your help to fund 10 Chromebooks to support a more collaborative learning environment for my students. With these computers, I will be able to smoothly use online and computer-based applications that will increase digital literacy skills in the English Language Arts classroom. In the age of increased cell-phone usage it is imperative for us to instill digital literacy to promote digital equity amongst all young people.

The digital divide is no longer an issue between the have and have-nots; we need to refocus our efforts on promoting digital citizenship that reflects knowledge, interests, and passions that can be leveraged for college and career aspirations.

While we do have computers, they are slow and do not consistently operate properly. They require frequent maintenance, and even have keys and parts of the exterior missing. Sometimes students can spend upwards of 15 minutes simply navigating to the page they need to work on or finding a computer that works. In a 45 minute class, that is precious time wasted that could be easily fixed by having up-to-date technology. I will often am forced to avoid more creative projects because of this issue.

With these Chromebooks, online tools such as Google Classroom will be seamlessly integrated in daily classwork and homework assignments. Students will be able to work at their own pace, engage in more creative activities, and more easily use supportive resources that fit their needs. They will be made available to students who do not have access to internet or computers at home. These Chromebooks will alleviate many of the barriers to incorporating more technology in the classroom, and enhance learning in a way that will enable my students to acquire the skills needed to live and thrive in the 21st century.
