Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are all learning English and are all recent immigrants who have come to the United States seeking a great education and unlimited opportunity. They reside in Queens, the most diverse location in the world. In our school alone, you can hear over a dozen languages spoken by more than two dozen nationalities. My students want what we all do--a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world.
My Project
One place we all want to make a difference is protecting our environment. Combine that with students' desire to make beautiful, creative work, and we have the elements for something great. I want to make sure I give them the right tools to do it. Thanks to other donations, we have computers, but they are limited in their creative potential. No one really gets excited by a powerpoint.
We will be learning about our oceans, and how humans can harm them, but more importantly how we can protect them.
Designing solutions to real environmental problems is important work, and I want them to communicate their ideas in truly memorable ways. Our "It's Your World" oceans exhibit will draw people in with students' artistic creativity, but making it interactive will bring it to another level. The Makey Makey is an easy and fun way to make anything - bananas, sculpted clay, even painted pictures - into a keyboard. Touching an object connected to the Makey Makey board simulates a key being pressed on a keyboard. Students can write simple Scratch programs to make their exhibits about the oceans narrate stories or play like video games.
My students are already excited to learn how to help the environment. This tool will unlock creative solutions to real problems. It is outside our budget to get these boards. Please donate to makey makey our projects amazing.
