Technology That Transports Students Across the World, Round 2

Help me give my students the opportunity to interact with history and culture on virtual field trips with Oculus Go! Students won't have to leave the classroom to travel across the world and experience the real world in a tangible way.

My Students

I've always said that I have great students, and I've never been wrong about that. I love knowing that my students have a safe place to express themselves and develop their strengths; social studies isn't the easiest class for some students because they struggle with memorizing facts and dates. But my classroom is different. Students learn to think from different perspectives as they navigate learning experiences; they aren't stuck trying to memorize things they can look up on the internet. I love seeing the transformations of my students when they realize that they not only have a place in our classroom but also in the world and in history as they grow into young adults entering into the real world. I see myself as responsible to provide real world, authentic, and special opportunities for my students to experiencing culture, society, and history from the comfort and security of our classroom.

My Project

This is round 2 of an ongoing project to incorporate VR into my classroom. My last project that included an Oculus Go was funded and we got a chance to look into educational tools and I'm convinced that VR is an untapped game-changer in the world of learning. I want to incorporate more VR viewers into my classroom with station so that all learners in the room can use the technology- the more devices we have available, the more effective it will become. My learners are so thrilled with our first classroom Oculus Go and they are excited to use it more. Our first lesson with it will take them through a guided tour of a refugee camp in Africa run by the UNHCR.

One of the most effective tools ever used in my classroom was a 360-degree tour of a room in Mohammed Reza Shah's palace in Tehran just before the Iranian Revolution overthrew his reign.

It was the most excited I had ever seen them in my history class! I know that if I can integrate a visual experience, like virtual field trips with the Oculus Go, not only will they become more engaged, but it will allow them to interact with the other cultures in a unique and tangible way. I'm excited to connect them to the real word with VR and travel across the world as their new experiences transform their learning experiences across the world!
