My Students
My students are 6-8th grade exceptional needs in an urban, public, neighborhood school in the third largest district in the country. My school had been on academic warning status with the state for 12 years due to low test scores. I am proud to say, this past year, we have done it! My school is officially a level 1 school. The school averages in the 53rd percentile in Reading and in the 44th percentile in Math compared to the national average. My school enrolls 280 students in an old building that can hold 750.
I have my own room and co-teach with a general education teacher to service diverse learners.
We have outdated Smartboards used as a screen to project on from an Elmo. My school community is 100% African-American and 96% low income. Students live within the school boundaries. All students are developmentally delayed and some with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, autism or speech and language impairments. Despite their disabilities, my students are strong and persevere coming to school every day to learn. Many of them are victims of trauma. The area is gang and crime infested. Frequent police, fire and ambulance sirens are heard
My Project
Many of my diverse learners have different academic areas of need, interests and function at different grade levels. After instruction through modeling and scaffolding, these chrome books will allow me to differentiate learning and provide individual/independent practice of math, science, reading and writing skills. Currently, mounds of paper are used to copy independent work for students to differentiate instruction. The chrome books will serve purposes such as: 1) Helping my diverse learners where they are academically and show growth towards their goals. 2) Appealing to their interests, making learning engaging and fun. 3) Exposing students to technology, media & graphics through online skills practice. 4) Saving the trees...less use of copier paper.
