Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a school that serves students with a variety of special needs including autism, intellectual disability and emotionally disturbed. From the outside looking in, people may assume they are not athletic and physically incapable, but they are wrong! Our students compete in the highest levels of competitive sports. We participate (and win) in Special Olympics games, CHAMPS middle school athletics and run in New York Road Runner events.
Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
Our students do not back down from a challenge. That is what I love most about this age group and population. They love to be active. They love sports. They love physical education.
My Project
Teaching students with special needs is all about adapting our materials to engage and allow for learning to transpire. In adapted physical education class, our students rotate in stations that incorporate fitness skills and exercise such as cycling, yoga, hand-eye coordination, loco-motor and fine-motor skills. What a difference it would be if one of those stations could be a technology based fitness station. The Nintendo Switch has multiple games that engage students in exercise in a fun and interactive way! Fitness games such as "Just Dance" and "Sports Party" can be the bridge that connects healthy life styles and leisure activities. Two of our student's most difficult challenges are positive social interactions and being physically active. The interactive activity games provide our students an opportunity to grow exponentially in both areas.
Exergames for physical education courses provides physical, social, and cognitive benefits.
Exergames are enjoyable tools that increase energy expenditure during play, motivate players to become more physically active, promote social interaction, and enhance cognitive performance.
