Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
T.E.A.M. Together Everyone Achieves More! This is our theme for the 2015-2016 school year. My students are required to pass the state reading test in order to be promoted to sixth grade. In order for this goal to be achieved, each of my students must increase their reading levels.
I currently teach a 5th Grade Read 180 class at a low income school in a large urban city.
The majority of my students are on free and reduced price lunch and have little or no exposure to the latest technology outside of school. Many of my students are labeled English as a Second Language (ESL). Some have been tested for Special Education but, sadly, did not qualify for services and some have been in our country for less than 3 years. The majority of my students have low self esteem, and are, at least, 2 grade levels below in reading. But ALL are in need of exposure to great literature.
My Project
The Read 180 program includes 3 rotations. These include Small Group Instruction with the teacher, Independent Reading, and Computers. The groups range from 5-8 students. Each student is reading on his/her independent reading level (Lexile Levels). I am asking for a variety of books to use with our Units of Study. These books will expose the students to excellent literature that I can use to introduce a variety of genres during our Read Aloud time. I would like to add an iPad to our Independent Reading Station. This will allow the students to be exposed to apps providing literature on their reading level using the latest technology. A set of printer ink is needed in order for each student to create a portfolio for their independent reading and various research projects. I want the students to be able to turn in assignments that they are proud of and look professional.
My goal is for my students to increase their self esteem and give them the love of reading before they enter Middle School.
Please help me reach my goal by donating an iPad, literature for instruction, and ink for printing student work. These resources will enhance reading instruction for my at-risk students and will expose them to high quality literature using a variety of technology resources.
