Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever listened to a book on a portable CD player? How about reading your favorite book on a NOOK? My Read 180 students are in need of this technology for our classroom so that they can be exposed to a variety of literature in order to increase their comprehension and fluency skills.
I currently teach a 5th Grade Read 180 class at a low income school in a large urban city.
The majority of my students are on free and reduced price lunch and have little or no exposure to the latest technology outside of school. Many of my students are labeled English as a Second Language (ESL). Some have been tested for Special Education but, sadly, did not qualify for services and some have been in our country for less than 3 years. The majority of my students have low self esteem, and are, at least, 2 grade levels below in reading. But ALL are in need of exposure to great literature.
My Project
The Read 180 program includes 3 rotations. These include Small Group Instruction with the teacher, Independent Reading, and Computers. The groups range from 5-8 students. Each student is reading on his/her independent reading level (Lexile Levels). I am asking for eight portable CD Walkmans and headphones so that my students can listen to the Read 180 books on CDs while at the Independent Reading Station. Each student listens and follows along in their book. By doing this, they are exposed to fluent reading and are prompted to stop and think about the story (using Metacognition). These skills are valuable tools to help children become independent readers and thinkers. Adding NOOKs to our Independent Reading Station will allow the students to be exposed to literature on their reading level using the latest technology.
My goal is for my students to increase their self esteem and give them the love of reading before they enter Middle School.
Please help me reach my goal by donating 8 Portable CD Players, headphones, 2 NOOKS, and protective cases for my Read 180 students. These resources will enhance reading instruction for my at -risk students and will expose them to high quality literature using a variety of technology resources.
