Technology Practice Makes Perfect

Help me give my students iPads for technology use in a 21st century music classroom!

My Students

My music students are eager to learn. They come from low-income families, but these students will take advantage of a chance to gain more knowledge and skills. I see this with other extra-curricular activities at our school as well. For example, most students will choose to participate in Drama, Choir, and various sports teams offered throughout the school year.

When I was relocated to this school, I noticed that there were no music supplies, instruments, sheet music, or equipment.

I contacted schools in my community, but they are in need as well. At this point, I turn to DonorsChoose.Org for help.

My Project

How can a music student use an iPad in a music classroom? Let me count the ways! I began using iPads in my music classroom when I came to work for Oklahoma City Public Schools in 2014. However, due to education budget cuts, iPads are no longer available to students with teachers who are not grade level classroom teachers. The iPad is the most current form of handheld technology and the technology that is most accessible and user-friendly to our current student body.

My music students use iPads in the music classroom to practice their most important music standards.

The students learn to tune their musical instruments independently with a tuning app. The students also practice counting rhythms for their annual Rhythm Counting Bee using an app called the Rhythm Cat. They can use this device in a small group, with a partner, or individually. During the second semester, the students will play treble clef instruments such as xylophones, and they will use the Treble Cat app, as well as Staff Wars, to practice reading their treble clef notes on the music staff in preparation for instrument performance. The technology also allows them to practice composing, writing and recording their own music. Teaching students to use these devices at school allows them to continue practicing their standards at home on their personal devices. Thank you for helping my students improve their music skills in addition to their technology skills.
