Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All over the United States students are required to take either the SAT or ACT exams to apply to college. The SAT/ACT exams are TIMED tests and when students do not know how to use a graphing calculator they are at a huge disadvantage on these exams.
The majority of my students fight the challenges of households with a single working parent and two or more younger siblings on a daily basis.
Money is tight for most of the students' families and yet they too deserve all the privileges (graphing calculators) a middle/upper class education can give you. However, my students are set up to fail when they (nor their school) can afford to provide those privileges for them. Having graphing calculators in the classroom is not just a technology issue it is also a social justice issue.
My Project
When graphing calculators are used in the classroom students are able to focus on the "why" behind the math rather than the computations. With Common Core State Standards starting next year the "why" is emphasized and without graphing calculators the "why" gets lost in the computations. The "why" is also emphasized on the ACT/SAT exams; and, students who use graphing calculators on these exams out score students who must do everything by hand. With these graphing calculators my students will be able to visually see the mathematics in a way they never have before.
Having graphing calculators in the classroom is not just a technology issue it is also a social justice issue.
Without learning how to use graphing calculators students are set up to score lower on the SAT/ACT exams; and are thus not eligible to apply to top colleges. When students know how to use a graphing calculator they are able to answer questions quickly and accurately (very important on a timed test).
