Technology Motivates and Teaches!

My students need an iPad to allow them to access individualized learning when struggling, expand their learning when they are soaring, and to practice their learning.

My Students

I teach in a rural school that experiences very high poverty. There is very little money in the budget for extra items like technology. I want to bring learning into the hands of my students in a variety of captivating ways. An iPad offers a wealth of ways to share and gain knowledge.

My students are delightful children that arrive everyday with the expectation that I am going to fill them with new knowledge.

In a class of 26 with a multitude of needs, it is often very difficult to meet everyone's individual needs every day, but that is exactly what I am striving to do. My goal every year is to find out exactly what my students are missing to close their "personal" gap so that they leave at a benchmark (third grade ready) level. That means that I must be able to individualize most of the learning that happens in my classroom. I have found that I can easily do this through the use of iPads. I am able to individualize sight words, reading tests and comprehension measures. I and able to individualize math levels and expectations and most importantly, I am able to individualize how my students create and share their knowledge. I am better able to reach every child everyday.

My Project

We utilize the iPads from the minute my students walk in the door. I have 26 students and six iPads. That is a 4:1 ratio so it is a race to see who will get to take their reading test first. Can you picture students racing each other through the door to take a test. It is a beautiful sight. As the testing finishes up, struggling readers take over the iPads to work on sight words that I have individually set up for them. As they do this, others read independently, and I am able to pull low readers to the table to read one-to-one with them out loud. It is a powerful thing to walk into a room and see that every student is accessing reading in some form. We use the iPads for math in pretty much the same manner. Everyone has individual facts that they are working on so they are able to access those and/or practice them in a variety of apps and online sights during a math center. As others are working out of individual math folders, I am able to pull small groups to the back.

It is easy to see that having iPads in the classroom allows students very close instruction on very specific areas while freeing the teacher to work with small groups on very specific areas as well.

Having iPads in my room allows me to access twice the number of students. The students are much more motivated to work when they use an iPad as it gives them immediate feedback on their work and allows them to create and explore. Please join me in bringing the learning to life in my room.
