My Students
My students are extremely passionate about learning and work extremely hard to achieve what typical students can accomplish so easily. They attend school in an inner-city district and are in various self-contained classrooms with a multitude of disabilities. I service students ranging from Developmental Delays, Intellectually Disabled, Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Other Health Impairments, Learning Disabilities and more! As you can see the needs truly are immense. All students receive speech therapy 1-2 times per week, and love coming in small groups and receiving the supports they SO need! Communication is something we take for granted, but my students experience the hardships of being unable to communicate effectively on a daily basis. Communication truly is the essence of human life.
My Project
I am the Speech and Language Pathologist in an inner city school. The needs are great, and the budget is small. Currently, I am providing all the necessary supplies for my student from my own pocket.
My students use a variety of low technology materials on a daily basis, including colored visuals and recordable voice output buttons.
The recordable voice buttons are used for the students to communicate simple needs to their teachers and paraprofessionals. For example, words currently used in the classroom are "help" and "more." However, they need more output options to effectively communicate! They also use a variety of visuals, which need to be printed on my color printer. They then need to be laminated for durability. Overall, these items are vital to their communication.
