Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The devastating budget cuts to education in California are so great, that our school is struggling to even provide basic school needs like paper, pencils, and glue. Obtaining the resources to fund any kind of additional technology are absolutely out of the question.
I currently teach 30 third graders in an economically disadvantaged elementary school where 87% of our students live below the poverty line.
In addition, 80% of my class is classified as English learners. Some of my students have special needs including attention difficulties and learning disabilities. It is saddening to see that these young learners do not only have to overcome the adversity of their diverse backgrounds, but also the hardship of the serious budget cuts threatening education today.
Many of my young learners are at-risk and require additional support with literacy and math instruction. My goal is to take advantage of the technology available to promote the learning of my students. Using technology not only motivates students, but it also prepares them to become proficient users of the technology of the 21st Century. Classroom iPads will allow them to have access to educational applications that are extremely motivating and target their individual needs.
My Project
My young scholars would be tremendously excited to have access to iPads in the classroom. The many free educational applications accessible through the device will provide opportunities for students of all ability levels to use technology for additional support to reinforce skills in phonics, vocabulary, sight words, sentence building, writing, spelling, reading, and math. Students can listen to storybooks, practice vocabulary, enhance spelling skills, reinforce letter and number identification, practice math facts, research any topic, strengthen their motor skills, and improve hand-eye coordination. Most of the applications are self correcting and provide instant feedback; thus making its usage more independent.
To bridge the achievement gap, students who are at-risk, need creative and innovative ways to support and reinforce their skills.
iPads are a creative way to put more computers in the hands of students.
Please help me touch the lives of my young scholars by funding this project.
