Technology: It's Personal!

My students need 2 iPads and a case to practice using current technology. The students would be able to access educational apps and digital book collections.

My Students

Some kindergartners are better at using technology than their parents. But, every year I have students who have never touched a computer keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen device. Technology is a wonderful way to meet the needs of more students!

My class consists of 25 kindergartners who are observant and excited about learning.

The students this year act like they have known each other forever, but they just met in August. They are learning to think for themselves and are becoming more independent. They love interacting with technology and actually cheered when we started going to Computer Lab once a week for 30 minutes. They eagerly wait for Computer Lab day every week. Most days students are racing to interact with the 3 computers in the classroom. Unfortunately, only 3 children have the privilege of classroom computer time. Our school is a Title l school with a large portion of our students on free and reduced price lunch. About half of my 25 students are from single-parent homes. Our school also has a weekend meal program in place for some families.

My Project

The iPad minis will allow students to interact with technology across the curriculum. There are apps that help develop reading skills and apps for preventing letter confusion between b and d or p and q. Scholastic has the estoria program which allows students to read digital books. There are apps for math. Some apps help with addition and subtraction skills while others help support counting skills. There are even storyboard apps that would be wonderful visual aides for new writers. The sky is the limit! My plan would be to continue trying to acquire enough iPads so that the students could work in small groups on particular skills that they need to be successful in today's classroom. In the meantime, students would be assigned the iPads on a rotating basis. They might also be assigned to work with a partner. Partners would be assigned based on the student's knowledge of technology and academic needs.

Education has changed.

We are told daily that we are educating children for jobs that don't exist. The best way to help prepare students for the unknown is to introduce them to current technology and help them gain the confidence and ability to persevere. The iPads will allow me to expose current and future students to technology in a fun hands on approach!
