Technology: It's Not Just for Math and Science. Let's Write!
My students need HP Chromebooks and art supplies to let their creativity flow when writing, and they need additional resources to work on reading comprehension skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Good morning!" "How was your weekend?" Bright eyes and grinning faces greet me each morning, eager to enter our classroom each day. Occasionally, sad, teary, or even angry eyes greet me as well. All students patiently wait their turn to give me a smile, hug, fist bump, high five or even to share whatever has them feeling blue.
I have the pleasure of teaching 39 amazing and unique individuals, many who are English Language Learners and/or economically disadvantaged, and some who are gifted and talented.
They enter the classroom each day anticipating the day's activities. Even though some students come in with worries, they are soon actively engaged, and, if only for a few hours, worry free.
I have high expectations for my students, and they strive to meet those expectations daily. My goal is to encourage them to be the best fourth graders and lifelong learners they can possibly be. They are the reason I enjoy teaching.
My Project
I would especially like to receive HP Chromebooks for my classroom to allow more students to have computer access. I only have three desktops in my classroom, but I'd eventually like to have a computer for each student. This is a step in that direction. Students would be able to work on their essays and use applications like Storybird to practice and share their writing skills. They would also be able to complete other class assignments and projects related to writing and reading comprehension, such as analyzing story elements, creating dictionaries, and designing book covers.
Many students and their families are starting over after Hurricane Harvey, and they do not have access to technology at home and were not able to begin the year with all the necessary supplies.
These students should not have the added pressure of worrying how they wilI finish their writing and reading assignments. Since I allow students to enter the classroom early in order to work on assignments they can't do at home, the Chromebooks would allow more students to do so. Construction paper is needed to complete the hands-on foldable activities used to teach reading and writing skills. Reading and writing go hand-in-hand, hence the request for the reading journal and workstation.
I firmly believe that with the addition of the Chromebooks, reading resources, and construction paper, my students will be able to complete their assignments with confidence. They will become better writers and readers, and their growth will be obvious by the end of the school year.
