My students need a classroom iPad to bring communication to learning.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Block's classroom raised $993
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are not typical learners and must be challenged by atypical learning materials. Technology is the best way to motivate and teach them. I have the skills to use technology, but not the equipment.
My class is made up of 12-14 year old young adults with Autism and a variety of other disabilities.
Most of my students are non-verbal and need help with most daily activities. We are in a self-contained school for children with special needs. At this point in their lives we need to look towards their future and nurture skills that will help them when they are out in the world after graduation. Teaching pre-vocational skills is extremely challenging. Technology is extremely motivating for my students. In addition to motivation it also gives me the ability to access materials instantly so my students don't have to wait. In the moment it takes them to look up, or for me to find something, I can lose their attention and the teachable moment that I had with it.
My Project
I have spent a great deal of time teaching daily living skills, social skills and language skills. This is a challenging task that takes hard work and dedication however when I see results, they are amazing! Unconventional methods of teaching almost always yield better results with my students. I have found that these young adults know about their environment and themselves however cannot communicate about it. In the past communication devices have been heavy, large and low-tech. Students are not motivated to use them because they are so awkward. With a classroom iPad I would be able to have choices in front of them instantly. There are many communication applications tailored to the needs of my students available for the iPad. We would be able to take our lessons anywhere! My students would not look out of place holding an iPad; they would fit right in with the rest of the community and be able to interact with it at the same time!
Communicating our wants and needs is a skill that is so important.
We communicate constantly in our environments. It is easy to forget how important that skill is because we use it all the time. Having the ability to use a communication device that is portable and motivating would make such a difference to my student.
