My Students

Can you imagine walking into a big, bright, beautiful kindergarten classroom on the first day of school and imagining all the possibilities for the year to come? That's what my students and I do every day. Outwardly, my classroom provides the safety, comfort and ideal setting for student learning!

Beyond our beautiful classrooms, the issues turn up.

Our school, still displaced in a temporary location following Hurricane Katrina, was never able to replace the materials we lost in the storm. The students entering my classroom never knew what school was like before August 29, 2005. The students coming in now enter with open minds and possibilities of the dreams they have of coming to school. They are eager and willing to learn. Their parents are engaged and want to be a part of their learning experience. I, as their teacher, want to provide them with the most effective, engaging, memorable kindergarten experience that I can! Unfortunately, my school district and I cannot do it alone. With budgeting downfalls, our children do not have the materials they need to be successful. That's where you come in!

My Project

This year I am struggling with an issue I've never conquered before. I have a classroom which is so diverse that I am unable to completely and effectively communicate with all my students. This year I have students whose first language is Spanish and although I try my best, I am still unable to provide them with the instruction that will get them on the road to reading quickly. We are making progress daily but the alphabet is kicking our butts. I struggle with what to do for them, and they struggle with learning but we have found a common tool that has helped us all: the iPad. I brought in my iPad once and it REALLY made a difference. They were engaged, excited and eager. This is why I am requesting the 6 Alphabet Tablets. These tablets would mimic some of the skills I used my iPad to show them. My students would feel more confident being able to work at their own pace on something that would make them feel better about their learning!

Learning is scary, especially when we aren't speaking the same language.

With your help, we could be speaking the same language: technology! Please help my ESL and Special Needs students get tools that will help bring them up to speed and on the road to reading!
