We live in a small community, with a lot of generations calling this place home. Growing up here is safe, comforting, and many people return after they complete college.
We are a program on a high school campus for students who struggle with structure and consistency in their life and daily schedules. We teach specialized academic instruction in English, Math, and Social Skills.
School is a safe place where students can be themselves and experience success. They collaborate on projects on a daily basis using communication skills and technology.
We have one goal for our students in high school:
To get them career and college ready by the time they graduate!
We all use technology in our daily lives. Our district has created an environment where each student has access to a Chromebook that they get to take with them to and from school. Students are understanding what "real-world" commitment and responsibility looks like!
For some of our students, however, accessing the technology can be difficult without some of the tools the rest of us might take for granted. Headphones with a microphone will allow students to listen to media and respond using their voices. This allows them to practice their speaking skills, in addition to accessing the curriculum in audio form. The computer mice will help our students who struggle with fine motor skills. They will be able to create projects and work on designs that were physically difficult for them to do before.
In Their Own Words
We want to be able to do our work in class and learn the same things as other students. It's hard for us to scroll the page using the track pad, so having a computer mouse will make it easier. It will also help us to be less frustrated with the Chromebooks.
Some of us have a hard time concentrating when there are a lot of noises or an echo from the speakers in class. The headphones will make it easier to listen at our own volume. We can even respond to questions using voice to text.
We have done fundraisers in the past by having car washes and selling bracelets. Those have been fun, but this is a way for us to use technology as a fundraiser. We want to learn how to use our voices in the technology world to help our class. This will help us to gain some of the skills needed to go to college or start a job once we graduate high school.
This project is important to us because it gives us a chance to work with the technology the school gave us. We can use the computer mouse to scroll the pages and drag items. We can also use the headphones to do our work. This is important because doing those things isn't easy for all of us.
We are hoping the community will help support us and see that all students don't learn the same way. We work hard in our class. We try our best. Sometimes we need a little more help to do our work though.
