I teach at a School-Wide Title I School. I have a number of small groups ranging in age from K-4th grade that come to me on a daily basis for an extra 30 minutes to practice and to reinforce their reading and/or math. Many of them are so excited to come to me and to participate in individualized as well as group instruction. They come to me from very diversified backgrounds. Some have the opportunity to be exposed to books and technology outside of the school day, while others have no exposure at all. Many families cannot afford the different uses of technology that might be offered at school. I want to offer them as many opportunities that I can within a given school day to reach their fullest potential. A majority of these students are from low income families and move around from relative to relative or from town to town.
I want to offer these students a chance of a life time to learn to read more fluently and phonetically.
I want to challenge them to become better at taking risks to better themselves in the real world.
My Project
All of these supplies that I am requesting have a home in our Title 1 Program. Many of my students struggle with the alphabet, letter recognition and writing in addition to identifying high frequency words. I want to offer these students a variety of tools that they can use to experiment with reading and writing as well as math manipulatives to explore with in small group settings. My students will use the playdough and bendaroos to make the letters of the alphabet. Which in turn, will help them to write words onto the magnadoodles and in craft sand. The wooden blocks and Scrabble letter tiles with help them to manuver letters around to create words and sentences. The blank wooden blocks can also be used for counting, sorting, and grouping in math as we make sets and groups. The two extra Apple Ipad's will allow each student to have a one to one device for writing letters, words, etc. It will also allow for different structures of learning within my groups. They will enjoy listening to passages and stories as they become better readers and listeners! I can download apps that would allow them to practice math facts on an individualized level, such as Reflex Math, Friends of Tens, or IXL in addition to downloading 'EPIC' so that they can listen to and read a variety of stories that are at their interest levels. The students can practice writing and identifying the letters of the alphabet while using 'Handwriting Without Tears, or on a white board. Adding these two Ipad's to the three I already have will allow each child to invest in his / her future.
Your generous donation to this project will improve our Title 1 Program by building stronger and more fluent readers!
