This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What better way to inspire great writers than being able to see and read their classmates stories, becoming each others writing mentors, as well as using mentor texts to lift craft and technique to eventually include in their own stories.
My school is located in the inner city, where poverty and need is common.
It is a large elementary school with over 1700 students, 70 teachers and extreme budget cuts that are threatening their education. My class is composed of 24 students and 100% of my students receive free lunch and 85% of them are labeled English Language Learners, even though they are all learning English as a second language. My classroom is a Technology Magnet, but very lacking in resources and materials. Even with these hurdles, my first grade students are all on their way to becoming great readers and writers.
My Project
Sharing stories is difficult with a student sitting in the front holding their paper in their hand. With the document camera, my students will be able to share and magnify their stories onto the board so that every one of my students can see it. Also, during Writer's Workshop, I make an attempt to teach writing through mentor text, but it is very difficult to point out an author's craft simply holding the book and showing my class, instead, magnifying for everyone to see will be much easier to highlight the author's craft and highlight it as an example. The same can be done when I model my own writing.
The document camera will allow my students to truly take part in using other texts as mentors for their own writing, making it more enjoyable and giving them a true opportunity to become better writers themselves.
With the document camera, my students will not only become better writers but their entire academic life will be positively altered as they will become active participants in their learning.
Truly being able to see how an author uses language to communicate to the reader and make the reader's feelings change from one page to another, will influence them in their own writing and communicating by mimicking and utilizing techniques their mentor authors use.
