Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At the end of this school year, I would like the students to be able to use their computers competently to research projects and information, and print their work for display and for their portfolios. Students are entranced by computers and wish they could use them all day. I wish they could too.
I teach in a Title 1 school.
My students live in a high poverty area and most are unable to afford basic school supplies. Technology is out of the question for them. Our district supplies individual laptops, but not the technology to enhance and enrich their use. The students are often distracted by the noise from other computers and other students. Headphones would allow each student to focus on his or her individual learning goals. Several students have attention deficits and are very easily distracted. They also become frustrated easily. Headphones will greatly decrease the distractions they are plagued by The students love working on their computers, but rarely see their work in printed form. It is difficult for them to share their work with their families or to draw their families into their learning. They are so excited that they might soon be able to invite their families to share in their learning.
My Project
Students will use their headphones to allow for better focus during individualized instruction. They will also print their writing projects, math projects, and science projects for display and sharing. They will learn to make and share Power Point presentations. Furthermore, they will learn to use an online journal to share their feelings and dreams. If a student is having a difficult time focusing on work, the journals will allow him or her to express feelings without disrupting the work of other students. Each student will have a chance to decompress at his or her own speed and then be ready to participate in classroom activities in a positive way. Finally, I will be able to communicate with individual students via the journals to let them know that I understand their feelings and offer suggestions as to how to handle the tricky feelings.
Our classroom is already a wonderful place to spend the day.
I cannot imagine a better place to spend the day than in a room full of children. Even so, it will become better for everyone with the new technology to enhance learning and communication. Students will be able to share their learning and feelings with others and we will build our community to be stronger and more sensitive to the others around us. Thank you for sharing in this wonderful opportunity.
