I am a first year Algebra 1 and Geometry teacher, predominantly teaching freshman and sophomores. My high school is a high needs comprehensive school, which has not made AYP for the past few years. Our students have made great improvements, however, every day is a challenge. I struggle to motivate students who have struggled with school and in math for so much of their education, and every day is an uphill battle. Yet, every single day is a reward. After 2.5 months of teaching, I can honestly say I love my job!
My biggest challenge is my students don't understand how geometry relates to their everyday life. As a result, some of them don't value what they learn. I would love to get them engaged, and I believe the geometric city project is a great way to accomplish it. Having an LCD projector would help them with the presentations they will be making in their projects. It will help me present ideas to them as a class about what kind of information they could include in their poster board project and in their essays. It will also help my students on a daily basis because I would be able to give them better notes with concrete real world examples and draw from online resources which I currently don't have access to.
For this project, I will need an LCD projector so my students can make their final presentations in the Spring. I think it would be great for students to see how geometry is used in their everyday life, especially in their own neighborhood. Presenting their projects would improve their public speaking skills and allow them to become comfortable presenting information in front of groups. Finally, using PowerPoint and online resources will help with the technological skills that some of my students lack.
Your help will make it possible for my students to become more successful in more than one area of life. It will also get them invested in the course and for some students, it may be that push to get them motivated about school.
