My Students
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 75% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools on Hawaii Island, as well as the largest elementary on the West Side, serving 1021 students. We have outgrown our physical space and there is no dedicated physical education space.
The majority of our students' first language and language spoken at home is not English.
Our students come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds, this along with their language acquisition has created an academic gap.
Our school is home to the only deaf education program with a licensed specialist in the State of Hawaii. We have the only IFC program on the island. We also have a large SPED population; most are participating in an integrated classroom setting.
Our school offers a large array of programs and services including a before school fitness program, participation in the Track & Field meet, and Jump for Heart program.
I service 1021 Kindergarten through 5th grade students, so this project would impact a large number of children. The children need exposure to technology and how to utilize it in their every day lives.
My Project
Utilizing technology will develop my students' content knowledge as they will be able to visualize skills, drills, games, techniques, as well as participate in various activities such as aerobic dancing and cardiovascular fitness. My students will use this technology to watch themselves performing various skills, critique themselves, and then work to improve upon these skills, thus growing their content knowledge and skill base.
Utilizing technology within the class, students will be able to create their own videos and present them to the class; share resources; and visualize how they can incorporate technology into their everyday lives, especially relating to being physically educated, healthy, and fit.
The LCD Projector and ELMO Bundle will allow lessons to be presented in HD quality, viewing of videos in real time; enables viewing of moving objects without delay; enlarges objects/documents for viewing by entire class, which improves students’ understanding of concepts and comprehension of complex instructions. Students are able to present their projects, such as a diagram of the playing area for the game they developed and are teaching the rest of the class. This will enhance student involvement with the lessons as they participate in an online cardiovascular dance routine, or learn how to monitor their heart rates, or track their fitness progress, or critique their skill performance. There are so many possibilities to enhance the curriculum when having the proper tools!
More than half of students from low‑income households
