Honestly, my students present me with a challenge daily. We hold morning meetings and then we ask the same three questions. How was your night? Anything you want to share? And what is your Battery percentage on? Naturally, the answers vary but what does not change is there eagerness to share. I feel after the morning meeting the room takes a deep breath then exhales and we can begin our day of learning. This is a middle school class grades 6-8 whose learning styles, level of skills and ability to focus vary. If each student had their own device it would allow me to be more efficient in tailoring their assignments to their needs. We must do small group instruction because of significant differences between grade and skill level. While some students are working with the teacher, others must work independently and their questions must wait. It would be fantastic if they go to their iPads for immediate answers.
Most of my students are males, visual learners, and for others reading is an extreme challenge.
To have technology in their hands and ears would build their confidence, give them support and independence. Hand held devices could enrich their individual learning and would ease some of their stress. The devices could tutor them in the weakest area, reinforce the instruction, allow the student to have multiple readings of their text. It would allow our small group rotation time to me be more impactful. Furthermore, we are moving towards more projects based learning. iPads would allow the students to present their information/projects in various forms. iPads would open up a new world of Literacy.
