I work with some innovative, energetic, and dedicated 9th graders at my school. Like many teenagers in their age group, my students are curious and have a passion. I am always taken back by the level of enthusiasm they bring to my class every day, even though for many of them, Math is not one of their favorite subjects.
Life is about making mistakes and learning from them.
I emphasize this statement because Math is all about making mistakes and how you can learn from them to do better next time. When I hear many of the stories my students tell about the mistakes they have made in their lives and how these mistakes made them want to give up and not come back, it makes me realize more and more how different their lives are from a normal teenager and the many obstacles they have to face before they even get to school. Still, they come to class ready to take on a new day, make mistakes, and learn from them.
The use of laptops seems natural in an English class or Science class but not many see the importance of using laptops in a Math class. I have always tried to implement different aspects of technology into my lessons. Whether it is using calculators to demonstrate transformations in graphs, smart notebook presentations to differentiate instructions, or use of document cams in order for students to display and present their work.
In order to encourage collaboration and group work in my classes, I implement the use of workstations in my lessons.
By creating a technology workstation, students can learn the concepts without constantly relying on paper and pencil. With programs such as google docs and smart amp, I can help students transform their learning and make it more hands on.
Many of the state tests my students must take to graduate High School are computer based. For example, their most recent Algebra 1 exam was computer based and I noticed how my students struggled with many of the technological components. Whether it was manipulating a graph or writing an equation using the equation editor. By having a technology station with this chrome book I can practice these skills with my students that will help them be more prepared for not only state tests but also when they enter college.
As I prepare my students for college and career readiness, it is vital for them to be tech savy and familiar with how to use a tool such as a chrome book for educational purposes. I believe that by starting early and having students constantly practice with some of the mentioned programs above they will be better suited to take on the challenges they may face in the future.
