My Project

Students in middle school are learning on devices in many classrooms. In our Intervention and Enrichment classroom the students have an opportunity to learn off of devices through games and reading. We have lamps and would love to cover our fluorescent lights.

Recently, a student stated they never heard of Mad Libs.

We have several laminated Mad Libs sheets where we discussed parts of speech. When reading the final story, I hear actual laughter from the students at the game table. Rarely, do I hear laughter when students are learning on a device. We have played Prime Climb, Wordical, Genius Square, and other card or dice games. Students really enjoy being off the devices and it promotes communication and socialization among the students.

Students love logic games, and would love a game like Blokus, educational board games, origami, brain teasers, and many other games that provide a challenge. Frustration is a part of learning as I teach them through lessons on growth mindset. They make mistakes in the games and learn to adjust their thinking.

The individual online lessons frustrate them so they work towards simple rewards. They are learning ways to calm down and focus on the lesson which is where the anxiety strips would come in handy.

We have a fidget box in our classroom that helps. The students have really been working on social emotional learning, anger management, and growth mindset. I am seeing positive changes in many of our students, and hope to continue the learning through games. We may even try them as an after school club.
