My Students

The children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves, my students value hard work and the opportunities they have, but face many social, emotional, and economic challenges. Over half of them are English learners and 90% come from low income families. Many have come to the United States fleeing intolerance or other hardships at home and are now learning to live in a very diverse community.

My students are developing into reflective learners who seek out opportunities for action.

At our school, we have a focus on communication through writing and presentation literacy. They are learning to tell their own stories. And with such a wide range of experiences to share and to learn from, they have a lot of stories to tell.

My class is caring, curious, and motivated. They love team-building activities and practicing their leadership skills. They enjoy math and the Zumba breaks that come afterwards. They get lost in stories and beg for one more chapter. They love using technology to develop research skills and to share what they've learned. They are great at making do with limited resources, but have so much potential to achieve more, given the opportunity.

My Project

Our school has a focus on career education, and my students are currently learning about careers that use Geography. 4th grade is partnering with my former Peace Corps host country and the Missing Maps Project to do a service learning activity to create maps for communities who do not have them. Students have been studying various ways that maps are used in different professions, and have spoken with expert Firefighter and Search and Rescue personnel about how Geography and maps are used to help people in danger. In cases of natural disasters or disease outbreaks, emergency workers rely on accurate maps of a community.

My students are exploring the idea of making maps as a form of Social Justice, and were shocked to find out that there are many communities in the world that do not have the technology or resources to create viable maps.

Our 4th grade classes will participate in a mapathon where they will work together to create a real, online, open source map for a community in need. In order to do this, they will each need access to a usb computer mouse to use with their chromebooks. Computer trackpads do not allow for precision, which is very important in mapping. Students will be working on tracing and labeling satellite images to show buildings, roads, and topographical features. I am hoping that this mapathon can become an annual event at our school, and maybe even become something our students can teach the larger community how to do, so we will use this technology year after year. When not being used for mapping, the mice will be available to all students at school who are working on design projects that require precision.
