My students need Chromebooks to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as we study and read about different countries, collaborate with each other online by writing and utilize e-books.

My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? Higher technology education is a must for the 21st century student, especially Special Education students, to have academic success. I want my middle school Special Education students to have that opportunity.

My students have a varying degree of Special Needs such as Autism(ASD), Dyslexia, Intellectual Disabilities (ID), Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD).

Many are English Language Learners (EL).

Many of them have experienced the trauma of losing their home in the Tubbs and Nuns fire in Sonoma County (Northern California). In the fire, all their personal belongings, clothes, backpacks with school textbooks and school supplies were destroyed. Already, many of the Special Education population have difficulty coming to school for various reasons such as socio-economic status and disabilities. The result is students have no access to a computer at home much less the Internet. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. We can close that gap by providing technology in the classroom.

My Project

If we had Chromebooks in the classroom, we could access the the tools necessary to navigate today's curriculum together. We will use the iReady app to improve their reading skills. We would be able to use BrainPop together and Kahootz for fun learning activities! I would also like to implement Google classroom, and Newsela into our daily routine. The students would not only be learning how to use technology skills for schoolwork but also be able to use the devices for other classes like Science and Social Studies. We need more than 4 Chromebooks but even with 4 Chromebooks, I plan on doing "Centers" so that each student would have a chance to use a Chromebook in my class.
