My students are mostly low income and our school is one of the most culturally diverse in the city of Philadelphia. We are a melting pot of different languages, religions etc...
What makes my students special is that most of them are going to be the first generation in their families to attend college.
Their parents are working two jobs in some cases to make a better life for their kids. My students represent not only their dreams but the dreams of their parents.
My Project
Working in a school district that is financially challenged poses special problems. Access to technology is extremely limited. It is not possible to create a lesson on the fly that requires technology because the limited number of laptop carts are signed out weeks/months ahead of time. Over the years our school has accumulated scientific probe ware which is fantastic but because we do not have reliable access to lap tops we cannot fully utilize the probe ware. I would be able to increase the number of STEM based labs exponentially with these laptops I am requesting.
