My Students
Technology is becoming more and more prevalent in society. This is also true in the classroom as the new Common Core State Standards require literacy in technology to succeed. Students will take the tests on a computer and be expected to maneuver through the computer-based test.
I teach in one of the most diverse middle schools in the United States.
I have students from different cultures, backgrounds, experiences, and opportunities. This is both exciting and a challenge. Given this, we have a wide achievement gap that must be addressed. All of my students are excited to learn and want to prove to me that they can be great mathematicians. Our school is working to ensure that every student is given the chance to show this.
My Project
My students are exposed to various levels of technology at home, so I want to expose all of them to technology at school. A colleague has started having students work on iPads and I would love to join with him to bring that technology to the classroom, thus I am requesting an iPad to join him in this endeavor. Working with diverse students who come to me at various stages of math understanding, I work hard to engage all of my students. Using strategies that allow me to reach more students helps me to teach more efficiently. The applications available on iPads help different learners engage with the math in new ways. Having an iPad in the classroom will help me to differentiate the classroom. Higher achieving students can expand on what they've learned and lower achieving students can receive support to better understand what they are learning.
This project is so important because it helps me to level the playing field in the classroom.
Some of the students have their own iPads, but don't know how to use them for math. Other students have only seen them in the stores. This will allow all of them to work with dynamic technology to prepare them for the Common Core.
