My Students
I am a special education teacher with children who have autism and communication disorders in grades k-2. I have a diverse class of 12 students. Some of my students need assistive technology in order to communicate. They love to learn and are very proud of their successes.
Many of them are able to do grade level work with the right support.
I work to help them access the curriculum through accommodations and specialized instruction in academics, social and study skills.
My Project
All of the students in my class have autism. Several are nonverbal and rely on technology to be able to communicate. Because of their disabilities, my students cannot learn to read the way other children do. Having access to the internet will help them access specialized learning programs that meet their needs. Through my district, we have subscriptions to some online programs that work great for my students. Unfortunately, I don't have enough devices for everyone to use these resources. Having an extra Chromebook will help my class a lot and give my students a chance to gain independence.
