Imagine having limited use of your hands, arms, and legs. Then imagine trying to have fun and be an independent teenager when you require help for even the simplest tasks. Those are the challenges my students face daily.
My students have moderate to severe special needs and attend a public high school.
They attend general education classes for a portion of the day and work on specific skills, such as recreation, in the special education setting. Many of them have medical or behavioral needs that severely limit their ability to participate in activities that typically developing teenagers enjoy.
My Project
With the introduction of switch adapted electronics into the classroom, students who have limited mobility and/or require simplified means to accessing the environment can become more independent. A switch is an interface that allows students to access more difficult skills such as pressing buttons, which are often too small for their fine motor skill abilities. Many of the students in my classroom enjoy music, so one off the best ways to get them started on their independence and teach them to use switches is through the use of CDs and other forms of music. Students, as a result, will have more fulfilling lives as they learn to do things for themselves and be more like their typical peers.
As donors, you have the opportunity to help students with special needs who are often overlooked by the school system.
Our students need many resources to grow and develop their skills. Unfortunately, budget cuts and state deficits have left us with little funding for this important population. Please help our students gain an opportunity for independence.
