I work at a Title I school in Houston, Texas with an amazing group of fifth graders. My students are inquirers that come from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. They thrive when given choices and are ready to take more responsibilities for their own learning.
They are motivated to show their teachers, peers, parents, community and the world that they are excellent thinkers and extremely knowledgeable.
I work with a very talented group that has different learning styles, different interests, different math and reading abilities. One of the essential agreements that my students came up with in the classroom is that, “in this classroom we all learn and grow at our own pace.” I would like to give them that opportunity and I need your help.
My Project
Our district provides us with wonderful programs for math and reading, however we don’t have equal access to the programs due to the number of devices that we currently have. With technology available to most of my students, I can differentiate, giving students more choices on how they can show their understanding and allowing them to grow at their own pace, especially in reading and math. The guided use of technology will also prepare the students for the digital future as they familiarize themselves with how to use google suite (documents, sheets, slides, etc.) and research to supplement the learning in the classroom.
They are ready and capable of so much, they just need access to the right tools.
Below is a letter that two of the students got together to write for the project:
Dear Donors,
Our class needs chromebooks and tablets because we have five ipads and six computers that are very old and slow. We also like researching, work on math skills on IXL, reading on Myon, not only that, we also like publishing our writings online and make PowerPoints. We don’t have enough devices for everyone so we struggle to do what we like. We will be excited and happy that you care about our education. We will put it to good use and take good care of it.
