Technology for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students

My students need an iPad in order to access all of the great things that technology has to offer!

My Students

My students all have some degree of hearing loss.

I have students who are completely deaf and use sign language and some that wear cochlear implants or hearing aids. These kids are special to me because they are facing adversity everyday. I travel between 7 schools in a low income community. I enjoy the teachers I work with and they are always willing to help and accommodate my students. These students face challenges everyday because of their hearing loss and their learning difficulties as well. These children are awesome and make my job easy!

My Project

Having an i-Pad to use with my students would help out tremendously. Most of the students I work with do not have access to the latest technology. There are hundreds of apps that are available to help children with hearing loss learn more effectively and appropriately. Some of the apps are interactive and fun, which will help keep my student's attention. One of these apps is Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy by iStorytime. This app is very animated and also has a sign language interpreter signing the book while it's also being read aloud. Utilizing an iPad will also help keep my students engaged in learning. Pencil and paper activities are wonderful and I use them often, but I want my students to experience learning right at their fingertips with interactive and touchscreen lessons.

These donations will help improve the quality of my teaching by allowing my students to gain access to technology while learning.

For one of my deaf students to be able to watch an interactive video with a sign language interpreter on the screen is something that would be truly wonderful. I want my students to be excited about learning and I believe this will help!
