This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you remember when you were in elementary school and looked forward to visiting the computer lab on a weekly basis? Those days are gone. Students of mine do not get nearly enough exposure to technology due to the giant, dinosaur age computer that can barely power up or down in under 30 minutes.
The students in my class attend a high-poverty school with very little resources.
100% of the students participate in a free breakfast and lunch program. A large number of my students attend a before-school program AND an after-school program, leaving them at school for close to a total of 10-12 hours per day. There is very little parent involvement in my classroom, as most parents are busy with either work or attending school themselves.
With all of this data, it is so surprising that my students are so passionate about learning, regardless of their lack of resources. It is inspiring to be their educator and pushes me to gather more and more resources for them to thrive and further their love of learning.
My Project
This all-in-one, slim screen computer will take the place of the dinosaur age computer with a gigantic monitor and tower that currently take up so much room. Students will be able to surf websites for research units, look-up a definition of a unknown word and most importantly, take a reading comprehension test without the computer freezing or shutting down on them before they are finished.
Since we do not have a computer lab on campus, computers are scarce and only available (if they are working) to students inside the classroom. This means that students are severely lacking computer skills! Technology is a HUGE part of today's generation and these kids have very little exposure. The Smarter Balanced Assessment will be on iPads this year, and most of my students have serious trouble finding letters on a keyboard. With these computers, students will be able to learn how to type, use a mouse, type something into a search bar and have technology at their fingertips (literally!).
Students are given the opportunity everyday for a half hour of "Free Choice" time.
This means they can work on any unfinished work, finish up the last chapter of a book they are reading, use manipulatives, etc. It would be absolutely thrilling to be able to add WORKING computers to this list! Students need exposure to technology and the computers we currently have in the classroom are not cutting it.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to view this project!
