Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

DHES is a Title 1 school that has very talented and enthusiastic students. The music teachers in our school district have been trying for over five years to obtain funding for new music curriculum. In addition, our school system’s music budget has become more limited. These cuts affect our ability to provide our students access to the resources they deserve. The students have shown their ability to be successful musicians and deserve every advantage they can get to enhance and strengthen their musical abilities and development. My students are kind, hard-working and compassionate and thoroughly enjoy sharing their musical performances with their school and community. They especially enjoy learning about other cultures, history, science and math, along with other school topics through their exposure to the arts.

My Project

As the band, dance and theater (Performing Arts) instructor, I include opportunities for students to use technology in my lessons. I presently have six computers and need to increase the number of computers in the classroom as I have 30 students in my largest class. My long-term goal is to provide a laptop for each student to use. In addition, our CD player is not functioning.

Students are very eager to use new software and technology to compose music, incorporate visual art into dance, and, create storyboards using animation.

My students have a range of instruments at their disposal for musical compositions and they also create set designs for our dance and theater productions. Students will be using interactive programs such as Quaver and Smart Music for musical compositions, IMotion and Art of Illusion for animation, and, sketch-up for costume and set design.

These laptops will provide additional technology for the students to share as team members when producing their projects.
