Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results ~ John Dewey, educator, psychologist and philosopher.
That is the environment I would like to promote in my classroom each day as they enter.
We have a diverse population, seventy-five percent of which fall under the category of socioeconomically disadvantaged.
About half of our students don't have access to computers or the internet at home. Technology at our school consists of three rolling carts for laptops and one computer lab. Our computer lab is about 7 years old, with desktops that require constant maintenance. Though our rolling laptop carts are an upgrade to the computer lab, there are not enough of them to go around for the classes that need them. Last year, California began computer-based standardized testing. Due to our students' limited exposure to computers and our limited resources, they are not fully equipped to meet the demands of this test, or develop the computer skills necessary to compete and succeed in the 21st century.
My Project
I would like my students to see that there is more to math than reading out of a textbook and taking notes all day. With the use of this laptop, I will be able to "flip" the classroom around and allow them to be the teachers instead of me always being at the front of the room. It will allow me to teach from anywhere in the room while keeping my students engaged. They will be able to participate in class from their own seats causing less distraction. I am hoping that they will improve their presentation skills by participating in whole class discussions. As I become more mobile, I'm able to get to individuals quicker while keeping the lesson going. I will have more opportunity to introduce student led activities to reinforce what we've learned for the day.
I want to modernize my classroom so that students can see how we are teaching to improve their lives.
It's so important to show that school is not archaic, but will prepare our kids for the future. They need to see that what we do in the classroom will prepare them for the 21st Century career.
