My Students

Our classroom is located in a highly restricted, structured and secure environment with little to no accessible room for creativity. I hope to change this by creating an art center with access to it for the older, long-term students in order to tell their stories and more using technology.

We are in a high need special education environment with kids from all walks of life and the full breadth of educational abilities.

My students range in age from 12 to 19 years old. They often hear about how we are in the bay area, what is ostensibly ground zero for technology and the new advances we adults so often take for granted. So often many of my kids have never had any exposure to technology at all, phones, laptops or computers especially. For us to see our kids blossom is huge, using the technology their peers with more privilege and access are using to fulfill themselves remains elusive and distant, financially impossible for many of the students in our program. I've tried so far with a phone camera and the lone, broken down, obsolete computer we have has motivated me to do this right, for them and by them! I think we need to do something about creating equity for our kids, many of whom will never get access to technological training and experience, especially in the digital world.

My Project

Students need an opportunity and access to discover their creative side and their artistic abilities as tools for creative storytelling. This computer, display and camera will help do just that. This camera can be used in our school and the imagery loaded into the computer so the kids can edit and create videos. They would love to use their lyrics and poetry to fuse with graphics and imagery they can capture with this, even in such a restricted and security conscious environment as ours. My goal is that some of our kids can manage to equip themselves with the skills and experience they need to take with them into the greater world which they most likely would never have the opportunity to do so! In particular I hope students can create something to demonstrate their skills to various programs that exist here in the bay area like the Bay Area Video Coalition so that they could further their pursuit of working with technologies like these and to possibly develop a career in the tech fields.

With our budgets being slashed so often and constant changes in administrations we can't provide opportunities for our kids they way we would want to without your incredible generosity.

I have told the kids about this project and they are so very excited by it. It is still an alien concept to them that people would show such generosity. I hope that by being exposed to such kindness they can pay it forward, so to speak, and consider their actions in a more profound manner than they would normally!
